State of the State of Chaos

This is pretty close to the finished project folks. Just pretend the baseboard is installed next to the door and that the outlet plate is attached without the tile blocking the screw holes. Just ignore that last part. I'll take some prettier photos soon but this is pretty much crossed off my list.

This is the before if you need a reminder - we flipped it from the living room to open to the hall in order to get a sectional against the now closed off wall.

Dining room update is that I have a ceiling once again. Even better is the fact that my dad likes to spackle. I have some smoothing to do then I get to paint the ceiling and fill in the holes in the old crown molding that was put back. Super. Hashtag myfave and soreneck.

Family room is still in this condition

My son hasn't moved (nor has the "broken house")

Picking up the tile for the first floor lav tomorrow. I foresee joy in racing a four year old up carpeted stairs after last second announcements like "I just have to go to the bathroom".

Have you ever seen a nice brass piece at a garage sale or antique store but passed on the item because metals can be a little intimidating? Well I have. Finding posts like this are like hitting little jack pots for me. One easy step?! What DOoooo you mean? Gotta love that. Here is the before and after of a dingy brass lamp:

Another DIY trick I've wanted to find but never made the time to search is the art of aging newer wood. This post gives the secret formula for this magic:

DIY Designer Book Holder [interior Design]

I really liked this the second I saw it at anthropologie.com and it had DIY written all over it. ESPECIALLY after I saw the price tag.

It's $2,000. Yes - two g's. I'm sure the books justify the price (maybe) but let's ditch the books Anthro and make it possible to get in a regular gal's home. Well I waited and it hasn't happened yet so DIY it is! Luckily someone else took the time to map out the plan. Check it out here on whollykao.com.

Stencil Your Walls [interior Design]

A friend is redoing her bedroom and is contemplating stenciling her walls. If you are up for some DIY and in need of a cheap easy wall makeover try a stencil! They are reusable and MUCH easier than putting up (then eventually taking down after the fad passes) wallpaper - trust me. Check out these stencils she found at the Etsy shop OliveLeafStencils. They've got some goooooood ones!

With some DIY time your space can be GORG!! How do you feel about stencils?

DIY Help [interior Design]

In honor of the "Flipping the Bar" project we are in the middle of tackling (more to come in the year 2086 when we actually finish it) we decided to share some DIY tips from those more knowledgeable than ourselves.

This is a shot of our general contractor aka my dad getting ready to cut the studs out of the wall we are removing. This is the calm before the four-letter-word storm.

The Familyhandyman.com gives great tips on the following here:

If something for some odd reason goes wrong with your DIY project then Apartmenttherapy.com has tips here on how to clean up DIY disasters such as:

• Blood from fabric
• Hot glue
• Super Glue
• Paint
• Straight pins and other fiddly metal bits
• Red wine
• Glitter

Feel covered now? Go ahead and get your glitter out.

Cool Ideas [interior Design]

I came across some ideas that are very lovable and want to pass along.

LOOK at this cool calendar! "The ink is absorbed slowly, and the numbers in the calendar are 'printed' daily. One a day, they are filled with ink until the end of the month. A calendar self-updated, which enhances the perception of time passing and not only signaling it" is the description by Oscar Diaz. So. COOL. I need one for my kitchen.

This is the Console Bookcase by Latvian designer Stanislav Katz. Love the color, function, and idea but not really feelin' the skeleton looking thing laying there. One bookcase bench - hold the creepy guy please.

OK who has a great ceiling like this? This is a fun/unexpected storage idea for all of you who are fortunate enough to have a ceiling like this in the first place.

An inverted bookcase by Jaren Goh Design for Munkii. Now why didn't I think of this? It's a great modern twist on a traditional shape. LOVE the concept but I'm thinking the inside goes teal...not that I'm obsessed with that color or anything.

VERY DIY-ABLE PEOPLE! Lamp + paint pen = makeover city. Easy math. If you try this please share a photo of the finished product with us!

The Restoration Hardware TV easel make me smile.  The flat screen would represent my husband and I would be the easel. He likes gadgets and I'm more of the creative one (yes I paint).
